Excellent product
Came on time. Easy to set-up (much easier than I had anticipated). Is performing very well. The only problem I've had so far is I can't get the fingerprint reader to recognize my prints (which is frustrating, but not the end of the world). I did tweak the software and settings a bit to increase performance and am very pleased with the results. Love the options and functions.

Acceptable PC
Acceptable. That's the word that comes to mind with my new HP HDX16. I would not call it spectacular or awesome. I just cannot win. Right out of the box the HP Media smart says it has stopped working, well that is because it does not have that upgraded feature on the machine that comes with the TV tuner. I did not order it nor did I really want it but now forever and ever I will get this dialogue when I flip on the computer. Why the heck does it take forever for a Vista computer to boot up? Just give me a freakin reason. My wife can get on her Mac Book Pro and check her email, bank account, and school tasks before I can even get the browser to open up. The HP has a top of the line processor labeled Genius, well I think Britney Spears was once labeled a genius too. So here we go again: constant updates, reboots, upgrades, reboot, buy this antivirus, required update, etc... All I want to do is my power point presentation, all I want is to do is Skype, I just want to listen to my music, etc... But as with every PC you've got to be a database administrator before you can you use a PC as an essential tool to your everyday life. Maybe I rely on these things way too much. I just cannot win.

- Vista sucks compared to XP
- pretty cheap not to include a lock when you close the screen
- Volume of speaker not very loud
- way to glary of a screen
- key board does not give me enough space to place my left hand (trade off having separate number pad)
- The 16 inch screen has less height to look at documents then the 15.4 inch screens
-the metal looking plastic going around the body makes it look cheap and may come loose over time

Great laptop at a reasonable cost
This laptop provides a great deal with both performance and economy (price). The monitor size is generous (17 inches), which is important to me because I write lots of technical documents. Its weight is somewhat large (nearly 10 lbs), so if you are looking for ultra portable notebooks, this is probably not what you are looking for.

With the ample memory (3 GB), Vista runs smoothly and programs load up quickly. Program installs proceed without hiccups. Even when the computer is running lots of programs, I do not notice any thrashing to the hard disk and the machine purrs on.

Other comments: Laptop does not get heated up. The keyboard size is ample, allowing the hands to rest on the laptop while typing. Battery life is somewhat limited (typically less than 3 hours), but the machine performance does not degrade when disconnected from AC power.

All in all, a great buy.

Love this computer. Haven't had a bit of trouble with it.
Great graphics, lots of memory. The one minor drawback, and it is only minor for me, is that it's a bit heavy. I don't have to spend my days toting it around, so it's not an issue for me.
Alot of bang for your buck here, and I'm glad I bought it!

Excellent product
Came on time. Easy to set-up (much easier than I had anticipated). Is performing very well. The only problem I've had so far is I can't get the fingerprint reader to recognize my prints (which is frustrating, but not the end of the world). I did tweak the software and settings a bit to increase performance and am very pleased with the results. Love the options and functions.

Acceptable PC
Acceptable. That's the word that comes to mind with my new HP HDX16. I would not call it spectacular or awesome. I just cannot win. Right out of the box the HP Media smart says it has stopped working, well that is because it does not have that upgraded feature on the machine that comes with the TV tuner. I did not order it nor did I really want it but now forever and ever I will get this dialogue when I flip on the computer. Why the heck does it take forever for a Vista computer to boot up? Just give me a freakin reason. My wife can get on her Mac Book Pro and check her email, bank account, and school tasks before I can even get the browser to open up. The HP has a top of the line processor labeled Genius, well I think Britney Spears was once labeled a genius too. So here we go again: constant updates, reboots, upgrades, reboot, buy this antivirus, required update, etc... All I want to do is my power point presentation, all I want is to do is Skype, I just want to listen to my music, etc... But as with every PC you've got to be a database administrator before you can you use a PC as an essential tool to your everyday life. Maybe I rely on these things way too much. I just cannot win.

- Vista sucks compared to XP
- pretty cheap not to include a lock when you close the screen
- Volume of speaker not very loud
- way to glary of a screen
- key board does not give me enough space to place my left hand (trade off having separate number pad)
- The 16 inch screen has less height to look at documents then the 15.4 inch screens
-the metal looking plastic going around the body makes it look cheap and may come loose over time

Staples has this price beat until 6/7/09
I was looking at this machine today, and it is on sale at Staples for $599 after rebate and instant savings. I am strongly considering it, seems to be at a good price/performance point.

Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone else is ready to pull the trigger. Amazon is a decent discounter, but is not always the lowest price.

Good machine but Windows Vista only and REALLY DANGEROUS BIOS upgrade!
This is a very fine and fully loaded laptop.

I already had a previous HP pavillion dv-1030us model at home (which gave me no major problems for the last years) so I decided to stick to it.

I still did not have the chance to really use it because as soon as it arrived, I got a HP Health Check window with a list of recommended upgrades that should be applied. Pretty normal and expected since I was turning it on for the very first time, right?

Well, the 1st upgrade in the list was a BIOS upgrade, which I obviously downloaded and executed. The only problem was that the new HP Insyde BIOS flash utility for Windows Vista seems to be more of a threat than a utility. It simply popped-up a "Verify Error" message and completely frozen Windows and made the fan and HD run like crazy . Even the power button stopped working. The only way I was able to turn it off was by removing the battery. After that, the machine was completely dead! The power button didn't even light-up any of the machine's LED, not even the battery charging indicator.

I chatted with HP "support" just to know that I'd need to send the laptop for maintenance. So I decided to return it to Amazon for replacement and now I don't intend to apply any BIOS upgrades from HP any time soon.

Smokin'
I have mainly purchased dozens of Dell laptops, wary of any other brand due to warranty issues. I took a chance with HP and I am very impressed with the quality of the display, sound, and durability. I was hoping that the video card would handle GTA4 but it does not, but that's ok, all other programs run smoothly. The touchpad is smooth so it takes a bit of getting used to in order to navigate. Because of the gloss finish, it does collect fingerprints easily, so keep a cloth handy. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this laptop to any type of user.

Great laptop at a reasonable cost
This laptop provides a great deal with both performance and economy (price). The monitor size is generous (17 inches), which is important to me because I write lots of technical documents. Its weight is somewhat large (nearly 10 lbs), so if you are looking for ultra portable notebooks, this is probably not what you are looking for.

With the ample memory (3 GB), Vista runs smoothly and programs load up quickly. Program installs proceed without hiccups. Even when the computer is running lots of programs, I do not notice any thrashing to the hard disk and the machine purrs on.

Other comments: Laptop does not get heated up. The keyboard size is ample, allowing the hands to rest on the laptop while typing. Battery life is somewhat limited (typically less than 3 hours), but the machine performance does not degrade when disconnected from AC power.

All in all, a great buy.

Love this computer. Haven't had a bit of trouble with it.
Great graphics, lots of memory. The one minor drawback, and it is only minor for me, is that it's a bit heavy. I don't have to spend my days toting it around, so it's not an issue for me.

Great Value for the Cost
I like this computer a lot. It is the first 64-bit model I have had. My only complaint is that it is hard to read the keyboard at night.

This is what i'm talking about
I've owned this laptop for one week now and can say I am completely happy & satisfied with it. The other reviewers detailed their cons with this machine, but I've experienced none of them. The keys aren't that horrible, but from the looks of other reviews, you can contact HP & they'll swap them out for you. Blu-ray discs look great on either the laptop, or streamed through an HDMI cord onto your flat-screen. I'm not sure if it's listed on the features set, but this model IS bluetooth enabled. I do wish it came with the included subwoofer, or internal TV tuner that the 1270, and other higher DV7 models came with, but that's life.

After you do your research, i'm sure this will easily place 1st or second once you narrow it down to what you'll buy.

Keyboard not readable in any light.
This is a great laptop, for almost any application. The major flaw was that design trumped function...the color coordinated keyboard featured black letters on bronze keys, and I could not read them accurately in any light at all.

I had to return it to HP who replaced the keyboard with a white on bronze keyboard I could read. (no cost, no shipping charges. It was gone less than 10 days.

Unless you are a complete touch typist who never needs to see a key, you may want to avoid this model.

I am now completely satisfied.
